Bioeconomy-led development: Opportunities through Nordic-Southern Cone countries cooperation

As part of the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID) network activities, an International Seminar on Bioeconomy-led development: Opportunities through Nordic-Southern Cone countries cooperation was held on 18-19 October 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Seminar background

Since 2013 the UniPID network has coordinated the FinCEAL initiative aimed to support research and innovation cooperation between Finland, other European countries and the LAC region; and build on EU-CELAC STI policy priorities.

Seminar objectives

In order to support partnership building and increase the number of joint projects in specific themes of mutual interest, including bioeconomy, the seminar aimed at:

  • Increase dialogue and synergies between existing bilateral initiatives between the Southern Cone and Nordic countries
  • Incentivise new multilateral R&I cooperation projects in different bioeconomy subtopics
  • Promote collaboration between CIECTI, FinCEAL, Finnish Natural Resources Institute (LUKE), VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Lund University and other supporting organizations

The seminar included four plenary sessions on the following topics:

  • The meaning of bioeconomy for development;
  • Three central thematic areas;
    • Forest bioeconomy
    • Agro-based new technologies and innovative uses of agro biomass material
    • Blue bioeconomy 
  • Funding opportunities for R&I cooperation in bioeconomy; and
  • Prospective analysis on bioeconomy in the Southern Cone and the social impact of bioeconomy (on employment, skills, labor migration, etc.) as topics to expand the cooperation agenda.

The sessions were not open to the public, but were convened by invitation. The thematic sessions were aimed to be constitute platforms for experts from the Nordic and Southern Cone countries to:

  • deepen the exchange started in the plenaries,
  • identify specific topics for concrete joint project ideas, and
  • connect relevant actors with the necessary expertise and interest to get involved in the projects that might emerge.

  • Bioproducts and bio-refineries as options for the integral exploitation of the biomass coming from forest plantations
  • Non-wood forest products (NWFP) from the native forest
  • Forest bioenergy

  • Sustainable agricultural intensification
  • Small-scale agro biorefineries

Key cooperation area on ‘Using sea biodiversity and sustainable use of water’

  • New technologies for the sustainable use of water and the production of new bioproducts

  • More precise definition of the topics for future projects as well as the experts and institutions that would be involved in each one of them

The Innovation Centre UC Anacleto Angelini of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile organised an international seminar aimed to position, promote, discuss and establish innovation capacities around some social and technological megatrends that will impact on quality of life by 2050, such as digital transformation, ageing society and sustainable cities, among others.

The seminar gathered national and international specialists with multiple visions of the future but a common and strong believe that innovation is one of the best ways to transform societal challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.

Around two hundred people attended the event, which also included participants via live streaming in Facebook and a much wider audience reached through mass media coverage from Radio Bio Bio and the National Television (TVN) of Chile.

The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, represented by Rafael Popper, presented foresight as a systematic, participatory, prospective and policy-oriented process aimed to Scope, Mobilise, Anticipate, Recommend and Transform (SMART) technological, economic, environmental, political, social and ethical (TEEPSE) futures.

VTT’s presentation also focused on how to assess and manage sustainable innovation, understood as any incremental or radical change in the social, service, product, governance, organisational, system or marketing spheres that leads to positive environmental, economic and social transformation without compromising the needs, welfare and wellbeing of current and future generations (Read more at CASI Tutorial) .

Anticipating, Recommending and Transforming Research and Innovation Futures

The world is experiencing great uncertainties about the unfolding economic crisis and its aftershocks. Many countries, industries and public services face challenging futures where the quest for opportunities is increasingly competitive. Economic discontent has combined with existing political stresses to catch many institutions – and countries – wrong-footed. Meanwhile, globalisation, migration, environmental, political and technological trends are reshaping the rules of the game. This calls for critical reflections on existing assumptions, plans and strategies for the long-term future. Our foresight course explores ways in which decision-makers can address uncertainties. How to produce sound and forward looking results that are useful for decision-makers?

The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research has been running an annual foresight training course since 1999. Building on over twenty years of foresight experience, we are able to call upon a wealth of expertise, from staff with know-how of the practice of foresight, as well as from sponsors and practitioners. The course now runs in partnership with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, a leading global research and technology development organisation. Future-oriented innovation policy research is a key focus for VTT, supported by the Centre’s competencies in qualitative and quantitative methods.

Towards a more responsible sustainable innovation assessment and management culture in Europe

This article presents new concepts and practical approaches resulting from the piloting of CASI-F – a common framework for the assessment and management of sustainable innovation (SI). Based on lessons learned from action research carried out in the context of the EU funded CASI project, the article focuses on the meta-analysis of 46 action roadmaps produced with 43 innovators supporting the practical application of CASI-F. The applied methodology helped to demonstrate that a multi-level and multi-actor advice approach promotes a shift towards improved understanding of innovations-related critical issues (barriers, drivers, opportunities and threats) and stakeholders’ relations, as well as their management, thus promoting the sustainable resilience and transformation of socio-technical systems. This paper first reflects on how we arrived to managerial lessons from the actions roadmaps and how could these lessons be used to assess the current state of affairs and potential way forward for European initiatives and instruments promoting sustainable innovation.

The CASI project aims at assessing Sustainable Innovations (SI) that respond to Societal Challenge 5 of Horizon 2020, namely ‘Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials’, in order to develop a framework supporting better management of SI initiatives. This FREE online course offers a comprehensive review of sustainable innovation related topics organised around 6 Modules and 12 Units.

Module 1: CASI-F in action

  • Unit 1: CASI-F principles and methodology – A five-step guide to future-proof action plans: Understand the why, what and how of sustainable innovation assessment and management.
  • Unit 2: CASI-F Tools – Web-based solutions supporting open innovation practices: Use CASI-F tools and optimize your innovation potential through learning by doing.

Certification

To qualify for a Certificate on ‘Sustainable Innovation Assessment and Management’ , signed by the Course Director from The University of Manchester, you should study and complete all modules (each lasting a maximum of 90 minutes) and score at least 60% in the self-assessment activities provided under each unit. Detailed information about your progress and score will be available under ‘My course’ tab of your user profile where you will also be able to retake each module (no more than once), if needed.

  • Certificate for satisfactorily completed course – By completing the full course with a 60-79% score in the self-assessment tasks you will receive a certificate of satisfactory completion.
  • Certificate for outstandingly completed course – By completing the full course with a score of 80% or above in the self-assessment tasks you will receive a certificate of outstanding completion.

Learning outcomes

While the CASI Sustainable Innovation Course offers answers and insights related to four key dimensions of sustainable innovation management (i.e. Context, People, Process, and Impact), one of the primary objectives of the training course is to focus on the ‘People’ dimension, and, in particular, on its two key aspects of ‘aptitude’ and ‘attitude’, which are necessary to promote and more effectively manage sustainable innovations. With this in mind, upon completion of this course, you will understand what sort of prerequisites, knowledge and leadership, among other skills, are needed to improve the sustainability of different types of innovations.

CASI Conference Exploring Policy Options for Responsible Research, Sustainability and Innovation

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION FOR RESEARCH, PRACTICE AND POLICY

CASI Conference 2016

The CASI policy conference focused on best public participation and sustainable innovation practices and identified common European priorities on how to stimulate societal participation for sustainable innovation activities in European regions, scientific institutions, SMEs and other societal actors. We brought together a broad range of experts, stakeholders, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, regional authorities and Commission officials. The CASI conference focused on the intersection of public participation and sustainable innovation.

In the first half of the CASI project and based on key lessons learned from the assessment of 500+ SI initiatives, a research team from The University of Manchester developed the following preliminary definition of sustainable innovation (SI):

  • Sustainable innovation is ‘any incremental or radical change in the social, service, product, governance, organisational, system or marketing landscape that leads to positive environmental, economic and social transformation without compromising the needs, welfare and wellbeing of current and future generations’.

However, as the project evolved with new lessons learned from management actions and roadmaps linked to 40+ sustainable innovation pilot studies, The University of Manchester felt the need to take a more systemic approach, which helped the CASI project move towards a final definition:

UK Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Innovation & Smart Cities (March 17th, 2016)

The CASI project (http://www.casi2020.eu/) is running a FREE Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Innovation and Smart Cities in Coventry on the 17th March.

The aim of the workshop is to foster dialogue with policy makers and other key stakeholders on the topic of wider societal engagement in sustainable innovation.

The workshop focuses on Smart Cities policies with structured discussions on key barriers and opportunities to stimulate wider societal engagement in sustainable innovation. Through discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of current policies and praxis we will look to identify areas of improvements or potential strategies that could be undertaken. The session will include a networking buffet lunch.
